Pressure Tank Problems and Costs
How the tank works, how to tell it has failed, and replacement prices.
How it works
The pressure tank stores water under air pressure so the pump does not start every time you open a tap. When the air bladder fails, the tank fills with water and the pump short-cycles, which wears it out early.
Signs of failure
Rapid clicking of the pressure switch, pressure that swings quickly between cut-in and cut-out, and water coming out of the air valve on top of the tank.
Cost
Angi puts a pressure tank replacement at $300 to $700, averaging $500. HomeGuide's installed prices run higher, from $450 to $1,000 for a 20 to 29 gallon tank up to $1,150 to $3,000+ for 120 to 139 gallons. The two sources differ by about 2x, so get itemized quotes. Replacing a failed tank promptly can save the pump.
