Printable No-Water and Well Pump Checklist

A one-page checklist for when the water stops, plus the yearly well check to keep with your well records.

When the water stops (safe checks only)

  • Breaker: is the well pump breaker tripped? Reset it once only. If it trips again, call a pro.
  • Pressure gauge reading: psi. Zero suggests the pump, switch or power. Low and falling suggests the tank or a leak.
  • Recent storm? Lightning often damages pumps and control boxes.
  • Check the sediment filter. A clogged filter can look like a pump failure.
  • Do not open control boxes or switches unless you know how to work safely with live circuits. Well pumps run on high-voltage circuits.

Before you call a pro, note

  • Pump age, if known:
  • Well depth or pump setting, if known:
  • What changed: no water, low pressure, rapid cycling, air or sand in the water.

Every year

  • At a minimum, check your well every spring to make sure there are no mechanical problems. (CDC)
  • Test the water at least once a year for total coliform bacteria, nitrates, total dissolved solids and pH. (CDC)
  • Test the water again after you replace or repair any part of the well system. (CDC)
